Susan Brown is a New Mexico based mix-media artist whose work explores storytelling, transformation, and the expressive power of handmade objects. Working in painting, collage, sculpture, and textile arts, she creates layered works that blend fine art, folk traditions, and personal mythology. A distinctive aspect of Brown’s practice is her creation of whimsical papier-mâché and cloth figures. Combining hand-painted forms with textiles, beads, found objects, and recycled materials, she constructs character-driven sculptures that evoke animals, spirits, and imagined beings. Each figure possesses its own narrative presence. Inspired by the landscape and artistic traditions of the American Southwest, Brown embraces experimentation and the transformative possibilities of mixed media. Her work celebrates the beauty of imperfection, the history embedded in everyday materials, and the universal human impulse to create stories through objects.
