Joey Serim

I have been a ceramic artist for many decades, influenced by the great Western and Asian artists, and by the colors and forms of city and Southwestern landscapes. I translate my love of clay into graceful functional pieces for daily use and special occasions and create sculptural vessels that invite personal interpretation and thoughtful contemplation. Working with both earthy stoneware and elegant white porcelain, I mostly throw pots on the wheel, but also hand build vessels using techniques I learned from Indigenous New Mexican potters. I enjoy using traditional Asian glazes as well as modern ones, often mixing my own to create a pleasing palette. Lately, I have been creating vivid, watercolor-like surfaces that evoke a sense of joy and playfulness, especially vital in these difficult times. The range of my work reflects my love of variety! I hope that my ceramics bring joy to the collector during life’s everyday rituals of eating, drinking, arranging flowers, and enhancing the home.
